DIY Electric Catamaran Using Two Saturn SUP414 Paddle Boards
DIY Instructions: Convert Two Saturn Paddle Boards Into an Electric Catamaran

This guide explains how to turn two inflatable paddle boards into a compact, lightweight electric catamaran using basic hardware, wooden crossbars, seats, and an electric motor.
1. What You Need
Boards & Structure
-
Two inflatable paddle boards (same size and model for balance)
-
Four wooden crossbars (treated wood, approx. 24–30" long depending on spacing)
-
Stainless steel bolts or nylon straps for mounting crossbars
-
EVA foam padding or rubber strips (optional, protects SUP surface)
Seating
-
Two lightweight folding frame seats
-
Mounting plates or wood boards under each seat (as seen in the picture)
-
Ratchet straps or heavy-duty Velcro straps
Electric Motor System
Choose one of the following:
-
Electric fin motor (simple)
-
12V or 24V electric trolling motor with:
-
Motor mount bracket
-
Marine battery or LiFePO4 battery
-
Waterproof battery box
-
Extension cable for throttle (if needed)
-
Hardware
-
Stainless steel U-bolts, eye bolts, or strap loops
-
Bungee cords for gear
-
Zip ties, marine rope, and stainless screws
2. Board Layout and Spacing
-
Inflate both boards to full pressure.
-
Place them parallel, spaced 18–24 inches apart, depending on the width you prefer.
-
Align the noses and tails evenly so the catamaran tracks straight in water.
3. Install Crossbars to Connect Boards
The crossbars keep the boards locked together as a stable catamaran frame.
Steps
-
Position two crossbars in the front and two in the back—similar to the picture.
-
Use nylon straps, D-rings, or U-bolts to secure the crossbars tightly to the SUP D-rings.
-
Tighten until boards feel rigid and do not wobble.
-
Add foam/rubber padding under the wood to prevent SUP surface scratching.
Tip:
The tighter the crossbars, the more stable your catamaran will feel—especially with a motor.
4. Mount the Seats
-
Place each folding seat on top of a small wooden plate (as seen in the picture).
-
Strap the plate to the board using the side D-rings.
-
Make sure the seat is centered to avoid weight imbalance.
-
Confirm seat frames cannot shift when you lean back.
5. Install the Motor Mount
Using an Electric Fin Motor
-
Attach one fin motor to each board OR a single fin motor on one board.
-
Connect the battery in a waterproof box and run the cable up to your seat.
Using a Trolling Motor (more power)
-
Install a motor mount plate across the back crossbar.
-
The mount should extend slightly beyond the sterns.
-
Bolt the motor bracket to the plate.
-
Ensure the mount does not flex under load.
Battery Placement
-
Place battery box behind the seat or under the rear crossbar.
-
Strap securely so it cannot shift during acceleration.
6. Electrical Setup
-
Connect motor leads to the battery terminals (red to red, black to black).
-
Secure cables along the crossbars with zip ties.
-
Keep all electrical parts elevated and dry.
-
Test throttle response before launching.
7. Stability & Safety Check
Before using the electric catamaran:
-
Ensure crossbars are tight
-
Confirm seats are secure
-
Verify motor and battery are immovable
-
Check weight distribution is even between both boards
-
Test power at low speed first
8. Launch and Enjoy
Once everything is secured:
-
Push the catamaran into shallow water.
-
Turn on the motor.
-
Start at slow speed to feel handling.
-
Increase power gradually and enjoy the smooth, stable ride.
The dual-SUP platform provides excellent stability, making it perfect for cruising, fishing, and exploring.
