New KaBoat SK487XL model features:

  • Transoms now have triangular splash guards to minimize back splash and protect the transom holders from heat and exposure to UV rays.
  • Bulky plastic handles on end tubes were replaced with sun resistant and durable soft handles for longer life span.
  • The valves were moved to the inside of the tubes and under the seat to protect them from sun and the elements, and to make inflation from inside the boat easier when on the water.
  • New models have different bench attachments to make them shorter, lighter and move slightly lower for easier rowing.
  • Grommet PVC splash guards with safety grab lines run all along the KaBoat's tubes from the front to the rear. Having grommets on PVC lines allows the attachment of additional accessories, kayak seats and custom made frames and arches for rod holders, night lights, etc.Same heavy-duty
  • 1100 Denier PVC as in SATURN boats & rafts.
  • Front spray skirt with water deflector guard and rope lacing.
  • Marine grade plywood transom with a one way drain plug.
  • Extra thick, high-pressure inflatable air deck floor.
  • Durable rub strake protectors along boat tubes.
  • 4 fins on bottom of tubes for improved tracking.
  • 4 (four!) separate air chambers for extra safety.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the 16' Heavy-Duty KaBoat SK487XL. Definitely not a cheap kayak toy. Loving it so far!

Very happy with both boat and customer service. Received my hvy dty sk487 in record time. I'm a big guy (290lbs) and a comparable jon boat is just too unstable. I needed a small boat for the Florida flats & marshes. With myself and wife this thing planes with a just a 5hp motor.

I love my Kaboat! With the right modifications, it's like having a full size boat that I always have with me in the 5.5' short bed of my truck. I tow a toy hauler, so I can't bring a full boat otherwise, and this is the next best thing.

I use a 20 HP Suzuki 4 stroke, and I get up to 27 mph or so. Plenty fast. I also installed two U-bolts into the transom so I can attach a split-V tow rope and pull my nephews on a tube. Pulled all three of them including a 14 year old at lake Shasta last month with no problems (so far at least).

I also bought the launching wheels and made simple aluminum brackets so I don't have to take them off after launching. I can just pull them up at an angle out of the water and out of the way of the motor.

Lastly, I bought TWO of the larger size bimini tops and strapped them together in the middle to make a single bimini that covers the entire boat with only 4 straps to hook on. The poles for the two bimini tops just happen to rest perfectly in the small metal D rings that are already installed on the
SK487XL, so all I needed was 4 cheapy carabiners to clip through the hole at the bottom of the bimini poles to just keep them from popping out. Very sturdy. So far at least. And I also attached a set of cheap battery powered strap-on lights to the bimini poles to make it night legal. Oh, and I strapped a hanging cupholder from Outdoor World on there as well. Got a Bose microlink strapped to where one of the aluminum seats would go for sound. I don't use any of the seats. I just lounge sideways inside the boat.

Like I said, a regular boat in the trunk of my car.
And I can hand launch it virtually anywhere, with or without a ramp, which I did at lakes all across the country last year on an RV trip. Couldn't be happier.

Got the SK487XL back in the spring of 2016. We used it for our RV trip in Key Largo and explored the mangroves. It fit easily inside the RV. Attached a 40 lb. trolling motor with a group 24 deep cycle battery which pushed our family of 4 (2 adults with 2 kids) for 2 days. It only used about half the charge. Nowadays, I have it on a trailer from Academy for easy launching. Added a 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke which can push the boat to 12 knots if I am solo with fishing gear. It does 6 knots with the family and gear on. I was able to fit the outboard engine and trolling motor on the transom. Been using this kaboat for two years now and still going strong. No rips or leaks and no seams coming apart. It is garage kept though so not sure how it would fare if kept outside. Great boat for the price. I am considering trying their kayaks based on my experience with the Kaboat. Hope this helps!

love this boat moves good with my 4hp .

Purchased the 16Ft SK487 in July 2012. Have used it for several multi day camping trips in large mountain lakes and the Columbia River in Washington state. With my 8HP four stroke and two people top speed is 22 MPH per my GPS. I have owned several inflatables, for the money this inflatable represents tremendous value. With the floor removed and deflated I can easily by myself transport between storage in the garage and into the back of my Explorer. With this boat I can carry four people without gear, or two people and camping gear for week long trips. I built my own sun top for about $35.00 using PVC pipe and a 5x7’ tarp. Would buy this again, positively great value for the money, I can afford most any boat I desire, but hate paying monthly storage fees and waiting in long launch lines. I purchased this boat to escape the crowds, for this purpose it is perfect, love it!

I have to say I love our new 16' Kaboat, we have had it out a few times and it's perfect, folds up and fits in the back of my Mini Cooper, Easy setup takes 10 minutes with a low volume electric air pump, finishing off with the supplied hand pump. For a family boat to take camping for river or lake excursions here in Oregon it's perfect, mind you I have already poked a hole in the air floor (fishing with kids) but it was a quick and easy repair. I was using a 15hp engine but it was overpowered and went to a 50 LB thrust electric, more than enough power to zip you about a river and lasts all day as the boat is so light to push.. Great job Boats to go...
